Yee Peng and Loy Krathong 2020 – an introduction. Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai is the biggest festival of the year. It takes place at the full moon of November. This is also getting towards the end of our rainy season so the rivers are full.

With the moon at its brightest and the rivers full it is the perfect time to ‘make merit’ and celebrate. Krathongs are small floating trays made from the stalk of the banana tree and banana leaves. They are decorated with candles and flowers.  We set them afloat on any moving water especially the Ping River. In so doing we offer our thanks to the River Goddess and also let go of our anger, grudges and hatred. We also light lanterns and send them skywards with a wish for good fortune in the new year. Needless to say it is a wonderful happy time here.

A VERY HAPPY YEE PENG and LOY KRATHONG TO YOU!
